Houseboy or stud?
Heh...
These things aren't even remotely related to going to law school, but they'd both be wonderful things to do. I'm not a career-inspired jackass, anyway, esp. seeing as I've only been thinking about law school since I was randomly inspired this summer. It makes sense to go, sure, but right now camp and MSA and community make more sense than anything.

In other news, Lost in Translation is every bit the excellent film people have said it is. That loneliness it bespeaks...it's somethin'. It was wonderful the way they lampooned the ineffectual, blonde movie star and the couple's twentysomething friends, who spend their entire time in Japan sitting together and going to photo shoots and merely talking about, airing their views on Buddhism and its "centrality" to the culture.
Earlier, I decided to go out and walk in the rain again and get soaked. Last year I was cowed by the forces surrounding me in that hellhole of a corner room and I'd just talk about doing these sorts of things—this year I [attempt to] do them. Took my roommate with me this time; I'm pretty sure I'm corrupting her. She'd protest, saying "I'm already more corrupt than you could make me," but as far as doing absurd/cacophonous things is concerned, she's fairly unsullied.
So we walked around the swamp, then went swinging amidst the pouring sheets of rain and blasting thunder and lightning. Afterward, we waded in the swampy hollows next to the basketball court, while people used the hill next to the swings as a Slip 'n Slide. I laughed at people passing and loudly called them out for being pansies, much to my roommate's chagrin. That felt good. Then I came back, took a shower, and donned a disco shirt. Feeling mighty proud of myself for being such a goddamned nonconformist, I went with the suitemates to see Lost in Translation.
Aren't I just a blooming star, a bonafide original?
Sigh. I love and hate myself for doing these things. Sure, I have it in me to do them, but it's not necessarily my style, just like literary magazines aren't necessarily my style, yet still draw me in.
As soon as certain people hear that I'm held in some manner of esteem by him, that I've worked with him on a couple projects now, was in a few classes with him, and lived upstairs from him for a year, it's almost like a direct pass into the inner circle. "This one," they think, "This one knows Austin. She might know something."
It's easy to see how this occurred. While Jablog or DC hubs aren't exactly fight clubs, they're communities in much the same sense. Their presence spreads by word of mouth, with their proponent seen in a near-mythical light. A sense of underground celebrity pervades the atmosphere surrounding him, and though I don't buy into the idea that Austin's a celebrity, per se, I've watched the cult following develop, especially with the mystery surrounding his recent disappearance from campus. There's definitely some power lying untapped here in his favor.
The guy's just got this odd charisma—though much of that, I think, comes from the fact that when you're talking to him, you know he knows what he's talking about. He doesn't give you B.S. and beat around the bush; he tells you things as they are. Yet he does know how to "handle" people, too, when necessary. It's an impressive act all around.
Enough, however, of my waxing analytic on Austin's temperament. I'll do more of that another day.
One can see the origins of all these little trends that criss-cross between journaling populations—certain surveys only appear among certain populations, etc., but if you look at this page it's almost a random sampling, albeit dependent upon who's doing certain things at certain times of day for certain occupations, or who's in a given time zone. This could be a great tool for looking at what's important to people in a culture, alhough there are a number of confounding factors, as I've mentioned.
I can see why people who start journals or blogs or whatever you want to call them always try to insist upon others starting them as well. After a while spent reading these things, it feels like everything that's important can and should be codified this way. The world is happening here, not in person, and people's writing voices are often more honestly theirs on a blog than in person. There are so many reasons this could be conceivably a good thing.
1. Coughing in the direction of other people and watching them cringe...muahaha, behold the power of the sick! They feel a cold wind as I pass by, and to them I am the soul of Plague embodied. [Editor's Note: Yes, there was something very wrong with me at this point.]
2. Requesting a library book that I rather want to read, but that I can wait for, making sure that a few other people have already checked out or put on hold all available copies—sometime a few weeks or months later, perhaps, I'll get an email and it'll be the book. Out of nowhere, as if by magic, the book comes into my possession, as at that late juncture I've forgotten I requested it in the first place.
3. Warm late-September days. They're almost as good as warm late-spring days, except there's the expectation here that they'll soon turn brisk and bitter, as opposed to the way spring days turn humid and rainy.
...and not so great:
1. The contradictions inherent in having a salad that literally weighs a ton. A salad, you see, is supposed to be light, not this heavy, crushing mass of leafy bits. A salad that size wouldn't really work right, seeing as it'd become so compressed at the bottom of the bowl that the leaves would turn dark and crushed with juices, rather than fluffy, lacy and crisp as they should be. In any case, I'm only talking conceptually, despite the fact that someone did make such a salad, because I don't eat salad. It's a waste of time. Editor's Note: Again...
I think being sick, though, has helped me feel more alive—coming out of the dazed, roaring trance of sickness is like being awakened again, à la Fight Club.

Even if I were to change my personal smiley schema, it would be utterly pointless, apart from the simple aesthetic convenience of not having to see those awful caricatures, since everyone else would still see the ugly version, thereby blurring my meaning. Hence why I always write out smilies, i.e. ": )", to avoid that ugliness.
